Preschool Craft……Apple Pie Scented Play Dough

Homemade Apple Pie Scented Play Dough

Homemade Apple Pie Scented Play Dough

My sister is a preschool teacher, and boy does she give me some of the best ideas for my little ones!  For the fall, she gave her tiny students in her class Apple Pie Scented Play Dough……and I thought she was a nut.  I have tons of the store bought Play-Doh, so why go through all of the trouble to make a homemade recipe.  Turns out, I am the goofball, because this stuff is amazing!

Homemade play dough is the softest, most pliable, and best smelling dough ever, as long as it’s made right…….who knew?  The following recipe is sure to keep your little guys playing for hours.  My kids love the store bought Play-Doh and will usually play with it for 30 minutes or so, but this fragrant goodness kept them entertained for almost 2 hours.  Of course, be creative with the ‘tools’ you give them, such as plastic utensils, seasonal cookie cutters (which we have a ton of thanks to diligent thrift store shopping), alphabet and number cookie cutters, and oodles of kitchen utensils.  If you have other great ideas for how to play with play dough, please leave them in the comments for others to enjoy!

Apple and Pumpkin Pie SpicesFirst off, you have to make sure that you have apple pie spice, which I did not, so I got a recipe online.  I usually make most of my own spice mixes because they are cheaper…… long as you buy cheap spices to begin with (and yes, I know that your cooking will only taste as good as the spices that you buy, but we have too many mouths to feed and we think the food tastes pretty good, so hey).  I buy Walmart brand or a really cheap spice line that I found at my grocery store (Food Lion) made by Bodia.  The only spice blends that I do not make are fajita seasonings and taco seasonings, because they are so much cheaper pre-made.

I got this recipe off of a blog called Baking Bites.  Not only does it have the Apple Pie Spice recipe, but a Pumpkin Pie Spice recipe as well… can check it our here:  If you love the apple pie scented play dough, then you will love pumpkin pie scented dough just as much!

1/4 cup ground cinnamon

1 tbsp allspice

2 tsp ground nutmeg

2 tsp ground ginger

1/2 tsp ground cardamom (optional, and I did not use this in my recipe)

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/3 cup salt

1 tbsp oil

1 tbsp cream of tartar

1 cup water

1 tbsp apple pie spice

Mix together in a big bowl with your hands, kneading it together until a soft dough forms in the consistency of a typical play dough.  Add more flour if needed, but slowly.

Store in a ZipLock bag, with all of the air pushed out.  We have had our play dough for over a month and it is still going strong.  Enjoy!
