Sample Homeschool Notice of Intent Letter

Here is an example of the Notice of Intent letter that I send in to my city’s Superintendent’s Office each year. This will at least give you a starting point when you attempt to write one for your family. Your options may or may not be different depending on your city and state laws and the choices that your family makes. Re: Notice of Intent to Provide Home Instruction

Dear Mr./Ms. Superintendent,

We are writing to inform you of our intent to provide home instruction for our children, name #1 and name #2, in lieu of having them attend school as provided in 22.1-254.1 of the code of Virginia (1950) as amended. We are eligible to provide home instruction by Option I (iv). Our description of the program of study and evidence of ability are below:

We will be providing one-on-one instruction and utilize many of the resources available to us (public library, home library, computer-based instructional materials, internet sites, local historical sites, home schooling literature clubs, art and PE classes). We will use the classical education methodology laid out in Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer’s “The Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home” as a guide with our focus being on mastery of new concepts as related to our children’s learning styles and developmental stage with the overall objective to instill a life-long love of learning.

Mathematics: We will be using the Math U See curriculum.

Language Arts: We will be using Vocabulary from Classical Roots and Rod and Staff for grammar, vocabulary and writing.

Evidence of Ability: We are able to provide an adequate education for our children because of our commitment to giving them a customized education to fit their needs and abilities. We feel that their academic experience and performance will be enhanced by the more individualized attention and skill-driven pace that is possible in a home education environment. Evidence of educational achievement will be sent to this office before August 1, 2012.

We would appreciate a written acknowledgement of our notice of intent and request that any future communication be in written form for our record keeping.

Sincerely,

Me

Hope this proves to be helpful in writing yours!
